oh how i love a reversible wrap skirt. it just says ‘lawn party at my house! who wants a mojito?’. this time i left the bottom hems unfinished, i like the raw edge and it lays better anyway. the fabrics are all amy butler who is awesome. she has a new book coming out, can’t wait.

the coolest thing i’ve done in a while.

one day i got a stroke of inspiration and decided to engage two of my friends in a little art project. you see, we all used to live in the same town and have managed to float in and out of working situations together, but now we live apart and are leading separate work lives. so i decided we needed to reconnect. ideally, we’d be hanging out at ten thousand waves spa in new mexico for a weekend, laughing, telling old stories and eating really good food. however…making fun art will have to do.

the concept was for all three of us to create something and send it to one another and then the other, like it is passing on a lazy susan around our imaginary dinner table. it could be anything - found object, photo, painting, piece of scrap - anything as long as it meant something artistically to the originator. so, as i sent mine off to wanda in california, she sent hers to karen in portland and karen sent hers to me. the next step would be to add on or alter and then pass to the next person who would do the same and then send back to the original owner.

it is art passed through the hands and imagination of friends, forever changed. i think i’d call it storytelling art.

i had fun, girls - thanks for playing!

another version. this one, however, should not have the binding at the bottom. i messed up and cut two squares instead of one rectangle which would be folded in half. i have a foldover closure now with ties. this is talula as we head to the pool, already digging in to her snack stash bag. there were no grapes left by the time we reached the pool.

early father’s day

icecream.jpg

for some reason i thought father’s day was this sunday. i don’t know why i didn’t bother to look it up, but better to be early than late, i suppose. i decided that summers in tennessee really do warrant owning our very own ice cream maker. as today hit 96 degrees, we gifted alex early and broke it in with a mixed berry frozen yogurt recipe. heaven. this machine can also make frozen beverages. magaritas, yes, but i am way more excited about the orange julius recipe! i can tell we’ll be eating a lot of ice cream in our future. that’s one way to beat the tennessee heat.

ceiling fans are a necessity in the south. well, so is air conditioning but if you’re trying to conserve energy, i think ceiling fans are moderately better. eventually it will be so hot we’ll need both the ac and the fan. anyway, we found a good one for cheap at lowe’s! it reminds me of a shape i’d find in marimekko fabric or something. cute.
